memory and art as resistance in post-conflict guatemala
In my experiential learning activity with the Human Rights in Latin America Research Group, I created this photo essay to further the research I completed on grassroots mobilizations, graffiti, and photography as tools of resistance in post-conflict Guatemala. This photo essay felt like a natural extension of the research and enriched my ability to process and understand how those directly impacted by state violence created healing and safety for themselves. This project required me to synthesize modes of information in an engaging and challenging way through the research symposium poster and the photo essay. This was my first larger attempt at thinking critically about the relationship between public space, art, and written expression. The time I spent on the creation of the photo essay and the process of thinking visually, encouraged a deeper connection with the research - something that often feels hard to root in lived experiences.
